Abstract
The purpose of the present paper is to analyze the effects of the elderly people`s stress on their suicidal ideation and the mediation effects of depression. For this purpose, an enquete was conducted to 737 aged older than 65 and the collected date were analyzed by the structural equation modelling. The major outcomes of the study could be summed up as follows£ºFirst, the stress of the elderly people was found to have no direct impact upon their suicidal ideation. Second, it became evident that the suicidal ideation of the elderly people is intensified as the level of their depression escalates. Third, the depression turned out to act as a complete mediator in the relationship between stress and suicide. Fourth, the multiple group analysis showed that there is difference among groups in the correlation of stress, depression and suicidal ideation depending on types of household (the elderly who live alone and those who live with family). That is, depression has partial mediation effect for the former while it has complete mediation effect for the latter. Based on the findings of this study, it could be discussed to take measures to prevent the elderly people from committing suicide and to promote their mental health in a practical manner as part of policy intervention.
